36: The Master
“Rest assured, Boss Zhang, we’ve got this handled.” The burly man leading the group grunted in a deep, gravelly voice. A massive skull was tattooed on his left arm, while a snarling tiger head clung to his right, exuding an aura of extreme brutality and menace.
To demonstrate his unwavering loyalty to Zhang Wenzhi, the burly man shot a contemptuous glance at Shen Yifei, then swiftly stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. With a sneer, he declared, “Kid, get on your knees and apologize to Boss Zhang first! Otherwise, if you end up with broken arms and legs, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Upon hearing this, Zhang Wenzhi’s mood immediately brightened. He thought, *This expert knows his place.*
“So much empty talk. How about I just get this over with?” Shen Yifei cracked his neck.
As his words fell, Shen Yifei delivered a brutal, unadorned kick.
“Ugh… Argh!!!”
Before the burly man could even react, Shen Yifei’s kick sent him flying, a strangely graceful, soaring arc through the air.
He flew over ten meters, directly into a large tree. The burly man slammed head-first into the tree trunk, landing face down in the mud.
Shen Yifei slowly withdrew his right leg, a cold sneer playing on his lips. “My apologies,” he murmured. “I might have used a little too much force.”
Witnessing this, the remaining four thugs gasped, their faces etched with disbelief and shock!
Shen Yifei, who stood before them, seemed of average build, not particularly muscular. Yet, he had effortlessly sent a one-hundred-ninety-centimeter (approximately six-foot-three) man, built like an ox, flying over ten meters. Was this even human strength?
Crucially, the other four thugs knew exactly how formidable their leader was.
This burly man was called Brother She. He was an elite enforcer for the Huahai Dragon Gang (a prominent criminal organization) in Huahai City. Thugs of his caliber were far beyond the average street ruffian.
It was no joke; if even someone like Brother She could be sent flying over ten meters, they’d surely end up in the treetops!
Thus, as soon as their burly leader was downed, their fighting spirit completely evaporated.
Shen Yifei had, in fact, deliberately held back. Had he unleashed even a fraction of his true power, no ordinary person could have withstood a single blow.
Still, a few broken ribs were perfectly normal, enough to teach the fellow a lasting lesson.
“Brother She, are you alright?” A thug with a buzz cut rushed to help the burly man, who was sprawled in the mud, back to his feet.
Blood continued to trickle from the burly man’s lips as he sat weakly on the ground, several ribs clearly broken, his face caked in mud.
“Brother, m-mercy! We were just hired, we didn’t mean to cross you. Please, have mercy and let us go this once.” Brother She pleaded, his face contorted in terror, his body trembling as he begged Shen Yifei.
He now understood he had provoked someone he absolutely should not have. Brother She had been in the underworld (the shadowy world of criminal gangs) for years and knew of the existence of certain true masters (individuals possessing physical capabilities far beyond ordinary humans).
Brother She couldn’t be certain, but one thing was clear: Shen Yifei, standing before him, was absolutely not someone he could afford to offend.
Shen Yifei raised an eyebrow, scoffing, “Good, you know when to back down. This young master (a somewhat arrogant but playful self-designation) is in a good mood today, so I won’t lay another hand on you. Now, get lost!”
“Yes, yes, yes!” Brother She nodded his head like a chicken pecking at rice.
Brother She shot a look at the four thugs beside him: “Let’s go, now!”
Two thugs hoisted Brother She up, and they quickly fled the scene. In his heart, Brother She was cursing Liu Meng and Zhang Wenzhi’s ancestors (a severe form of Chinese curse) to the eighteenth generation. Not only had he failed to get paid, and would have to pay a fortune in medical bills, but he had also nearly provoked a true harbinger of doom (a formidable and dangerous individual).
Seeing the five thugs scramble away like terrified rats, Zhang Wenzhi’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t quite process what had just happened.
Liu Meng’s heart was already trembling. If even an expert like Brother She couldn’t handle this kid, it spoke volumes.
*No wonder this kid was so fearless. He was a master of that caliber (an individual with extraordinary abilities)? Today, they had truly run into a brick wall.*
“Boss, this kid is too formidable. ‘Where there’s life, there’s hope’ (a proverb meaning as long as one is alive, there’s always a chance to succeed), we should… we should apologize to him,” Liu Meng whispered to Zhang Wenzhi.
If they didn’t apologize to Shen Yifei, he had a premonition that both he and Zhang Wenzhi would face a grim fate.
“Apologize your mother! You think I’m scared of him?!” Zhang Wenzhi instantly flared up. He couldn’t swallow this insult.
Liu Meng thought to himself, *If you’re not scared, you go face him yourself. I’m not going back to the hospital.*
Before he could think further, Shen Yifei was already striding towards Zhang Wenzhi.
“You… don’t come any closer! Shen, I’m warning you, if you dare touch me, you’ll regret it!” Zhang Wenzhi stumbled back a few steps, trembling all over, a look of pure terror on his face.
“Oh, really?” Shen Yifei was running out of patience. He was the type who wouldn’t bother others if they didn’t bother him, but if they did, he’d retaliate twofold.
Just as Shen Yifei was about to teach Zhang Wenzhi an unforgettable lesson, Su Muqing behind him suddenly tugged at his sleeve. Biting her lip, she said, “Shen Yifei, don’t be rash! Zhang Wenzhi is my classmate.”
Seeing the woman’s complex expression, Shen Yifei sighed. He gave Zhang Wenzhi a flat look. “For Su Muqing’s sake, I’ll let you off this time. But if you dare cause me trouble again, I’ll make you truly understand the consequences!”
Zhang Wenzhi was seething with resentment, about to curse him back, but upon seeing Shen Yifei’s menacing gaze, he immediately fell silent.
“Let’s go,” Shen Yifei said, taking Su Muqing’s hand and leading her out of the alley.
Su Muqing couldn’t help but ask, “Why did Zhang Wenzhi…”
Shen Yifei sneered, “Ms. Su, do you really think Zhang Wenzhi wanted to treat us to a meal? He just wanted to put on a show and deal with me. It seems his little act didn’t go as planned, so he got angry and simply sent people to target me.”
Su Muqing had vaguely guessed much of what Shen Yifei said. She had naively believed Zhang Wenzhi genuinely wanted to make peace, but she hadn’t expected him to be so petty!
“Anyway, the matter is settled now, Ms. Su. Don’t dwell on it too much,” Shen Yifei said with a smile.
Su Muqing remained silent. She couldn’t understand why this man always remained so composed. But one thing was clear: she finally understood why her grandfather had said Shen Yifei possessed extraordinary abilities.
Such skill would certainly rank him among the very best bodyguards. She had indeed underestimated him.
Su Muqing felt that Shen Yifei was still hiding something, but she didn’t feel it was appropriate to ask.
“Ms. Su, what are you thinking about?” Shen Yifei asked with a smile.
“Nothing. Just try not to cause so much trouble for me in the future, and don’t resort to violence at the drop of a hat,” Su Muqing retorted with a pout.
Shen Yifei looked a little dejected. “I don’t like being bullied,” he said. “If others bully me, I naturally retaliate. Of course, you’re an exception.”
Su Muqing was speechless. “You make it sound like I bully you all the time,” she huffed.
“Haven’t you bullied me enough? Ms. Su, men have pride too. Sometimes, you shouldn’t just trample on it,” Shen Yifei said helplessly.
Su Muqing couldn’t argue. Thinking back, she had indeed held many prejudices against Shen Yifei, and even now, some still lingered.
